Definitely Superior provides an alternative exhibition, art production and performance site for established professional and emerging/New Generation/Youth artists working in all media. We work to provide and increase opportunities for presentation of work by regional/national/international artists, encouraging media cross-over and multi-media work. The purpose of this is to develop new and more varied forms of expression in artists, to broaden the scope of their work, and to encourage development of new skills. Definitely Superiors’ artistic endeavours are focussed at the very nexus of creating new and experimental works, which are by their very nature; research and development. This is the role that Definitely Superior and the entire network of some 150 artist-run-centres play in Canada; to develop artists and the essential seeding of new and exciting arts production and presentation that reach audiences throughout the region, provincially, nationally and internationally.

Our new gallery location offers a transformational environment and the opportunity to repurpose part of the former Cumberland Cinema 5 warehouse/ theatre complex to meet future gallery space requirements providing 6,500 sq.ft. more than double our previous space. Definitely Superior will allow for expanded exhibition opportunities and activities  as well community engagement due to the potential of this versatile multi-functional art space and location amidst the revitalization of the warehouse district on the periphery of Downtown. Signifying a new era for Definitely Superior Art Gallery and further integrating/redefining our gallery into the heart of the vibrant arts and culture of Thunder Bay.

Annually the gallery presents approx. 45 exhibitions, events/activities, supporting as many as 2,150 multi-disciplinary artists with a viewing /participating audience of 38,650. It should be noted that 45% of our programming is through outreach and thus outside of our gallery utilizing alternative public spaces/venues and invariably creating new partnerships, high profile events, audience development and increased public engagement.

Definitely Superior Art Gallery was acknowledged in recent years as the 2013 Laureate Winner of the prestigious Ontario Premier’s Award For Excellence In The Arts, which recognizes outstanding achievement and contribution to arts and culture, This is the first time an arts and culture organization has been acknowledged from not only Thunder Bay, but all of Northwestern Ontario.

We can look back on the last two years with a strong sense of accomplishment under the harsh realities of a worldwide pandemic/gallery relocation/renovations and forward to celebrating our 33rd anniversary in which Definitely Superior Art Gallery, with improved communication strategies and initiatives along with long range curatorial planning, will launch the gallery into significant new future directions.
