Definitely Superior is Northwestern Ontario’s premiere nonprofit artist-run-centre for the contemporary arts.  Formed in 1988 and working at the dynamic edge of the arts, Definitely Superior operates as an alternative to both the commercial art galleries and to the larger, more mainstream public art galleries.  The gallery is a member of ARCCO and is committed to paying current CARFAC artists fees.  Our mandate goes beyond presenting visual art exhibitions and extends into the programming of workshops, artists lectures, film and video screenings, performance, music and literary events.  We work to provide and increase opportunities for research/production, presentation, promotion and dissemination of work by regional/national/international artists. 

We promote three types of curatorial based programming:
1) Main Programming – International, National, and Regional professional artists.
2) Open Space Programming – emerging artists, collectives, and arts organizations.
3) Arts Education – emphasizes mentor-ship and education of students and youth artists so that they may gain experience in the research, production and presentation of contemporary art in a professional environment. 

The gallery provides an expanded mixture of regional student/youth/collective exhibitions, tours and activities.  Definitely Superior’s artistic endeavors are focused at the very nexus of creating new and experimental works, to develop artists and the essential seeding of new and exciting contemporary art that reaches audiences regionally, nationally and internationally.  Definitely Superior invites submissions from arts educators, schools, artists, and curators.

Definitely Superior Art Gallery is generously supported by the Ontario Arts Council, The Canada Council, and the City of Thunder Bay Recreation and Culture, along with donations from members, patrons and supporters.
